I am Sunni who is strongly influenced by Sufism, and the Sufism that I adhere to is the sober, Shari`ah-observant Sufism, especially the moderate asceticism of what might be referred to as proto-Sufis amongst Muhammad's Sahabah and Tabi`un (like`Ali bin Abi Talib, Abu Dharr al-Ghiffari, Abu Darda, Salman al-Farisi, the Companions of the Sofa, Uways al-Qarni, al-Hasan al-Basri, Ibrahim ibn Adham, Sufyan al-Thawri, Fudayl ibn `Iyad), as well as Sufis like al-Harith al-Muhasibi, Junayd al-Baghdadi, `Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, Abu Hamid Muhammad al-Ghazali, Baha' ad-Din Naqshbandi, `Uthman ibn Fudi, etc I really don't want to "toot my horn" here, but if it will help me find someone, then I will. Its a means to an end. I have a B.A. in Religious Studies from the Ohio State University. I have a M.A. in Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. Currently, I am a PhD candidate in Religious Studies (with a focus in Islam) at the University of California at Riverside. Al-hamdulilah.
